POSTCARD FROM UPALAND
upaland
Upaland is an emerging collaboration between the village of Gourdon, in the North East of Scotland, and the Gourdon residents Neil Cargill, Mara Marxt Lewis, Tyler Lewis, and Eve Mosher. We will be collectively engaging in an imaginative exploration of the past, present and future of this historic fishing village.
who?
We are all neighbours who love the village and the people in it and want to celebrate and support Gourdon into the future. We hold ourselves to this set of ethical standards.
Eve Mosher
Eve Mosher works at the intersection of climate change and imagination. After working with communities on impending impacts of climate change, she is now developing tools of imagination and creativity to tell the story of tomorrow. Her interests range from crafts, to cooking, from gardening to raising kids wild and free. Expect lots of making and mapping and imagining and probably some seaweed foraging and cooking.
Tyler Lewis
Sound designer and composer Tyler Lewis uses multi-channel sound composition influenced by musical techniques to create tangible soundscapes that transport visual elements including sculpture, found objects, waste materials and more to create an experience.
Mara Marxt Lewis
Mara Marxt Lewis is a socially engaged art practitioner. Her work encourages personal experience. Her practice is concerned with the complex relationships between humans and their natural environments. Her endeavors inspire individuals to reflect on their nuanced connections with nature, examine their positions and roles within their environs, and engage with their physical surroundings through different sensorial means. She continually navigates between the realms of collective engagement and individual experience such that her projects accommodate both use and contemplation.
Neil Cargill
Neil Cargill has created many innovative drama, comedy and feature programmes for BBC Radio 3, 4 and World Service, specialising in fusing experimental, immersive audio with entertaining, thought-provoking narratives. With family history in the area dating back a few centuries, it’s maybe not surprising the sounds and stories of this part of the coast and the sea continue to be a huge influence on his writing.
